What is the first thing you think of when you hear the name ’Thermalright’? Is it great cooling? Innovatively designed products? Or perhaps uber good looks? Or is it a combination of all of them. Sure they have had great success with their products like the SLK-900, SP-94, SLK-947U and of course there was ALX-800 which I still use today. So why did Thermalright need to come out with a new heatsink and one that’s as large as the XP-120? It’s a pretty simple answer really, HEAT. With the newer processors running faster and generating more wattage we as the consumer need better ways to remove the heat from our processor since not all of us want to switch all of our computers to water cooling.
The other reason Thermalright went with such a large design is is the sheer fact that this heatsink can accept a 120mm fan, where prior to this the largest fan we could use had been a 90mm unit. With the ability to use large capacity fan (120 mm) we can then enjoy the reduction in noise since the fan will most likely be operating below 2500 RPMs and still provide us with almost double the air flow of an 80mm fan.
